Asthma and Breath Analysis: Research Presented at the RISCD in Warwick

At the RISCD international conference in Warwick, PhD student Raffaella Germinario presented a paper on an innovative approach to the study of asthma based on breath analysis. Her research is part of an industrial PhD program carried out in collaboration between the Polytechnic University of Bari (Prof. Francesco Dell’Olio) and Predict (Mistral team). She is currently undertaking the overseas placement required by the program at the University of Warwick in England.

The paper, titled “Stratifying asthma severity via breath analysis using the MISTRAL platform with integrated H2S sensor,” presents a modified version of the MISTRAL platform that incorporates a sensor for detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The objective is to leverage biomarkers present in exhaled air to swiftly and non-invasively obtain information regarding the severity and presence of the disease.

The results indicate that H2S levels fluctuate according to the severity of asthma, with higher levels observed in the early stages and lower levels in more advanced forms. This pattern suggests a possible role for H2S in the mechanisms underlying the oxidative stress response and reinforces its potential as a clinical biomarker.
